Impressions from the island.

Sending some love from Curacao.

We are on the 6th day on the beautiful Island of Curaçao. We are living in an area which seems to be a housing estate. Furthermore, we are surrounded by local house owners.

The area is a bit far away from everything to be honest, but we didn’t just come for the beaches. We try out a workation, so we don’t need a beach to be nearby.

On the first days, we tried to explore the area by walking, as it seems walking is not very popular in this area. Everybody seems to prefer the car. I begin to understand why. You have a lot of dogs here guarding the houses. Some houses have 5–6 dogs looking for the property. Don’t you mind walking past a fence, the dogs will go completely crazy, and we are just hoping that the gates stay closed. I am not a fan of the Doggy Dogs, that is something I have to get used to here.

The locals are really great so far, we got a ride three times by now without asking for it. The first time, we wanted to look for a shop in the area, and we got in the wrong street. There was an older woman standing by a fence, and she asked us where we are going. We told her we are going to the supermarket, she shook her head in disbelief and asked: You really want to walk there?

She called for her husband and told him to bring us by car. We insisted that we can walk, but the old lady was stubborn. I was skeptical a little, because you don’t know how things go in different countries.

Guess what, this people were just nice and gave us a ride to the supermarket without asking for anything. Pretty heartwarming, isn’t it?

The second time we were walking again, it was a 4h walk already and the sun was burning my white skin. It was getting dark, and we were in an area surrounded by barking dogs. Definitely somewhat out of my comfort zone. Then a lady standing in her property asked us where we are going. It was a Dutch lady living in Curaçao. We told her our walking stories. And once again she offered us a ride without even knowing us, she also proposed to help us with some hiking track tips when we have interest.

Yesterday was the 3rd time we were offered a ride. While shopping in a Chinese Minimarket, we had a bit of confusion with the credit card at the checkout. A local lady helped us with the currency and on the parking lot, she asked us where we are heading, as she was going in the same direction anyway, she took us with her.

The “Bushalte” on Curacao

Unfortunately, the public transportation is nothing like we know it from Europe. There are some busses available, but nobody knows when they come and where they go. There is litteraly just a station which says “Bushalte” there are no time or destination informations on it.

To really explore the island we will need a car. Tommorow we will get a car and explore the island with all the beaches and the capital Willemstad.
