Cutting Back on Social Media

Two months of actively trying.

Dear beloved readers, I had a little challenge going on. The goal was to cut back on social media substantially.

Two months are over, and I want to share with you how it went and what did help and what did not.

My main goal was to keep away from the networks till 6p.m to be more focused while working.

Let’s go straight to the stuff that helped me:

I developed the habit to scroll Reddit in bed before sleeping :

  • I just deleted the App from my mobile (that was enough to stay away)

I was binging too much on YouTube.

  • In Firefox, I used following extensions to stay away:

Leech Block: helps you manage the times you are allowed to access certain sites. (It has a bit of a downside because you can disable the Add-On)

Unhook: I love that one! You can set up a very clean YouTube site with this Add-On. No Home Feed, no recommendations, no comments. (It saved me a lot of hours)

I have a lot of Bookmarks in Firefox, I put the bookmark’s toolbar to never show while I am working with (Ctrl+Shift+B)

Putting my Phone on black and white colors was surprisingly effective. It gets 40% more boring to stare at a black and white iPhone. The screen looks like an old school TV now, beautiful.

Conclusion:

I had a lot of days when I didn’t manage to stay away from social media. Especially days when I was bored or felt weakish.

It was worth it to observe my behavior and use technology to cut back the time wasters.
