Do You Look For Every Little Occasion to Get Hammered?

I know I was.

I am becoming a real adventurer, guys, I am leaving my house for a longer ride every second week. This time we got invited to play some poker with former university buddies. There would be people which I had not seen in 16 years. Can you believe that, 16 years? This number almost made me tear up like a nervous wreck.

But I am losing the point, I wanted to write about every occasion to drink. Do some of you remember the Moneymaker Poker Hype when Poker was on every TV station and everybody was playing? At this time we were playing the game every weekend with friends, and it was always a time to get hammered.

Fast-forward 20 years later, nothing changed. An occasion like this is still an event to get hammered.

I was excited about this event like a young boy getting his Lego Technics for Christmas.

So much time has passed since I felt some cards in my hand and shuffled some chips. It was time to play again, I picked up my buddy Mr.Ripped and we took the 200km ride to the poker game.

We arrived early and went to the balcony because it was the smoking spot. While standing there, one of the dudes which I don’t know starts to tell his story about Dry January. He tells us that he is participating in this special month. At this moment, I was surprised that Dry January actually exists outside of Medium.

Very cool to hear that people are using this month to stay away from alcohol. He goes ahead with his story and tells us that when he manages to stay sober for this evening he will pass the Dry Jan. Then he got a little bit concerned and told us that later on somebody will come who does not appreciate his sober ways.

I was tempted to present the Dry Jan participant with some smart ass sobriety tips and tricks, but I kept my mouth shut because he was in stress already.

What also stood out to me this evening were the faces. There were like 5 sober people out of 30, and you could tell by one look in their face. The look of faces changes a lot with intoxication, and not positively. The sober people looked like they could start to work at any given moment or take a flight to a sunny island.

In the past such an evening would definitely be a reason to get shit-faced, everything else would be unthinkable and boring. I would rather sleep on the floor than not to consume. Everything for the holy intoxication!

Now I have a different look at it. That are some hours of poker with friends, why do I need to be drunk during these hours? Why exactly? I can’t understand it anymore, that shows how much of a learned behavior this was that luckily can be unlearned again.
