Working for Happiness

There is no magic pill to be happy in sobriety.

Recently, I wrote an article about some nostalgic feelings about alcohol. From time to time, there is some FOMO creeping up in my mind about the “fun times”.

I think what we loved and miss about alcohol was the easy solution it provides. You can step away from problems in an instant and enjoy yourself. You can be together with the most idiotic people hearing your least favorite music absurdly loud, with alcohol you’re going to dance on that party as if it’s the best time of your life. Try that sober and see for how long you can take it.

That is the point with sobriety, you can’t be in a situation that you hate and feel happy or detached from your issues. The concerns do not magically disappear while you are sober.

We actually have to work to create the situations, the relationships and the life that we really want. You feel great after a workout? First, you have to put in the work for getting that feeling. You would like to socialize more? Again, the work of organizing and getting over yourself has to be done.

It can be stressful to be happy or relax for people that always choose the easy way out. That is something I still have to get used to and find my ways to have fun, socialize and relax.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel great most of the time. I am just asking myself why this nostalgic feelings are coming up even though we know what alcohol can do with us.

I am still on the quest of getting used to all of this. But I know in my heart that the discomfort of change is worth it.
