Are they therapists for addicts?

Is it possible to get rid of addictions by consuming content creators that are not professional therapists?

I remember when I started my journey into an alcohol-free life. YouTube and Blogs were my go-to place. I didn’t look for professional doctors or therapists. I just typed in “Sober Stories” into the search field of YouTube.

I was looking for persons I could identify with. When you find somebody that you can relate too, and you see that he or she accomplished what you are trying to do. That has tremendous power and impact in my opinion.

By watching all that videos and reading the blogs, I was thinking. “That dudes story sounds similar to mine, I can relate to that.” “If he was able to get rid of alcohol, it should be possible for me too.”

Furthermore, you can consume all that content anonymously in the comfort of your home. I think it is a different story to show up somewhere in person and admit publicly that you have a problem and could need some help.

So yes, in my humble opinion, content creators can be a valid alternative to help addicts. Especially for all the cases where people think the problem is not big enough to see an official group or a therapist.
