Money and Sobriety

Let’s talk about finances while staying sober.

Do you like statistics or tracking ? I love tracking, because it gives you all the truth in numbers. Since I quit my relation with alcohol and nicotine, all the savings were tracked.

As writing this 22/7/2021 I am 129 days sober and smoke free. That is roughly 18 weeks of sobriety.

Lets asume I spend 15€ per week on the booze, that is a realistic number for me on the lower end. My smoking app says I saved 237€ since quitting cigarettes.

18 x 15€ + 237€ = 507€

That is a total of 507€ saved by resigning. That doesn’t take into account all of the opportunity gains. The days I was able to work and earn instead of wasting the day hung over. When you drink and don’t reflect or track it is very natural to come up with justifications and self-deception.

I was constantly broke in my 20’s but it was to hard to admit that alcohol and cigarettes played a big part in this. I am really proud that I am not donating to these dirty industries anymore.

I’d rather take the money and do something more meaningful with it. I can treat myself with a good meal, go on a short trip or buy books and courses. Stuff that actually benefits me.

I keep 100€ of cash on my working desk. Spending on alcohol and cigarettes would normally diminish it little by little . Seeing the money staying where it should stay, motivates me to continue with sobriety.

If you are thinking about getting sober, that could be one of your motivating reasons.

Why should you harm yourself when you could treat yourself ? Wishing you all the best on your journey.
