At the beginning of my sobriety, I was a big fan of NA beer and Soft-Drinks. They helped me to replace my conditioned behavior. The act of having a drink in my hand while socializing or relaxing was heavily engraved in my brain. The taste of NA beer made me feel like I was having a little reward.

I drank 1 or 2 cans of NA beer in one evening, something I always wished would have been possible with the spirituous counterpart. Two cans of 0,5 liters is actually a lot of liquid. Now I know why I was able to drink 4–6 cans of beer in the past in a relatively short time, it is not because I had such a good taste for choosing the most delicious type of beer. No, I was just greedy for alcohol!

I also drank a lot of Soft-Drinks at the beginning of my sobriety: Fanta, Club-Mate, and Malt-Beer were my favorite drinks. Sometimes I drank 3–4 bottles in several hours. I was feeling a bit dizzy and not present when I had to much of this surgery drinks. It is hard to describe that feeling, but I felt a little off.

When my sobriety continued, I started to look at the quantity of sugar in these drinks. It ranged from 5–9gramm per 100ml. That is a lot of sugar for a drink that should serve the purpose to quench. Little by little, I cut down on these drinks. Till eventually my interest in them disappeared completely.

Conclusion:

Sugar is no joke folks!

NA Beer and Soft-Drinks helped me in the beginning of my sobriety. With time, I lost the need to drink them. Now I enjoy the most basic drinks: Water, tea, sugarless coffee. It does not feel boring, it feels natural. Sobriety led me to a more healthy lifestyle step by step.
