It Does Get Easier

The power of time.

For a long period of my life, I had a problematic relationship with alcohol. Over one year ago, I decided to quit, and stayed that way.

On the way, there were quite some situations that triggered me to take a drink.

To my positive surprise, some days ago I had a situation that showed that it does get easier and the cravings for alcohol do fade away. Let’s get into the story.

I procrastinated to put new tires on the bike of my girlfriend endlessly. Finally, I made the order for the tires, they were lying around in my room for one week. After some while I couldn’t take the stares of my girlfriend and the tires, it was time to get active. I flexed my muscles and decided today is the day, I am going to put on the tires.

I do this in the basement of our flat. The assembly was going great. As I sweat my way through the task, my neighbor came in the basement. He is highly active with repairs and crafting and hangs around in this basement a lot.

Proudly, he showed me some repairs he did, and we chat it up a little. In the middle of our conversation, he asked spontaneously. “Hey, do you want a beer?”

In the fraction of a millisecond, I replied “No, thanks, I am fine.” Normally, a situation like this would be a huge trigger for me. This time, I didn’t have to white-knuckle this decision or ruminate back and forth in my mind. It was a nice little moment that showed me time does actually heal.

If you are in the beginning of your journey, and are concerned about having to use all your willpower forever to stay away. Let me tell you, the cravings will fade away more and more.
